A Hero in the Making - Quest Guide

Soon after your heroic triumph over the primal Ifrit, the Grand Companies of Eorzea send officers hoping to recruit you.

Requirements

This quest is available if you have completed the quest Lord of the Inferno.

Starting the Quest

Talk to Minfilia in the Waking Sands in Vesper Bay in Western Thanalan to start the quest. There will be a cutscene.

Speak with Tataru

Go back out to the upstairs and talk to Tataru.

Attend the Remembrance Services

You can attend the remembrance services in any order. Tataru's recommended order is Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa Lominsa.

Attend the Remembrance Service in Gridania

Go to Gridania and use an aetheryte to go to Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre. Go southeast through the gate to the amphitheatre and check on the sparkling Destination. There will be a cutscene.

Attend the Remembrance Service in Ul'dah

Go to Ul'dah and use an aetheryte to go to The Chamber of Rule. Go to the south side of the circle and check on the sparkling Destination. There will be a cutscene.

Attend the Remembrance Service in Limsa Lominsa

Go to Limsa Lominsa and go east from the aetheryte plaza. Talk to Zanthael. There will be a cutscene.

In Summary

In their speeches, the leaders of the city-states reflect on the history of their nations, the Battle of Carteneau, and the Calamity. They call on their citizens to put aside their differences, to unify and serve their nation to stand against the continued threat of the Garlean Empire and primal-worshipping societies.

During these remembrance services, Alphinaud introduces himself and his twin sister Alisaie. Their motives are unclear, but Alphinaud expresses an interest in the current state of affairs in Eorzea, and in the role you will play.

Report to Minfilia

Use a Vesper Bay Aetheryte Ticket (which you received after completing the quest The Scions of the Seventh Dawn) to return to the Waking Sands. Talk to Minfilia to complete the quest. There will be a cutscene. This one is important, so it is recommended to watch it either now or via the Unending Journey in an inn room. Alphinaud chooses to support the Scions and Grand Companies as the driving force against the threat of the Garleans and primals, while Alisaie mistrusts them and will seek a different approach to dealing with the problems that face Eorzea.

Choose a Grand Company

If you are playing New Game+, your Grand Company will not change.

To choose a Grand Company, speak to the officer of the Grand Company that you want to join, and say yes, then accept the next quest. Consider the following when making your decision:

  • You can change your Grand Company, but you will have to wait 15 days to switch again. The first change is free, and thereafter it will cost 50,000 gil. Switching away from a Grand Company does not cause you to be demoted in that Grand Company if you decide to switch back. You will lose access to the seals (currency) specific to that Grand Company, but the seals that you earned will still be there if you switch back.
  • Each Grand Company has purchaseable gear (such as uniforms) and items (such as banners and furniture) that are unique to that Grand Company.
  • You may find yourself going to your Grand Company headquarters frequently, so you may wish to choose a Grand Company that is in a city-state that you like or a location that you find convenient.

If you don't care which company you join, you can leave it up to chance by using the widget below to generate a random number between 1 and 3.
1 = Twin Adder, 2 = Immortal Flames, 3 = Maelstrom

Whichever way you reach your decision, if you speak to the Flame Officer and say Yes, the next quest is The Company You Keep (Immortal Flames). If you speak to the Serpent Officer and say Yes, the next quest is The Company You Keep (Twin Adder). If you speak to the Storm Officer and say Yes, the next quest is The Company You Keep (Maelstrom).
