Interacting with Other Players

The basics of how to interact with other players of Final Fantasy XIV, including chat window commands and more.

Introduction

This page gives a basic overview of ways to interact with other players in Final Fantasy XIV. You might also want to read the official Communication Guide on The Lodestone.

The Chat Log Window

The chat log window for Final Fantasy XIV is in the bottom-left corner by default. (If the chat window is not there, you can press Enter on keyboard, or the Back button on gamepad, to make it reappear.) You can switch to different chat channels by clicking the speech bubble and selecting the desired channel. You can also use different chat channels without needing to manually switch to them by starting your message with a slash command, such as /say . See the Chat Commands table at the bottom of the page for more information.

Emotes

Emotes provide another way to interact with players. Emotes include facial expressions, gestures, dances, etc. More emotes can be unlocked with certain quests, and some can be purchased from the FFXIV Online Store. For a full list of the emotes that are currently available to you in game, choose Social from the Main Menu, then choose Emotes.

Please note the checkbox in the bottom of the Emote menu that says "display log message". If this is checked, a description of your emote will be displayed to all nearby players. Please do not emote repeatedly in short succession if this checkbox is checked. This will flood local chat with your emotes. If you do this, you may be disciplined by a moderator (a.k.a. Game Master or GM) in-game.

Joining Parties

If you are a Free Trial player, you can't invite other players to a party, but players not on the free trial can invite you. To invite players to a party, you can select the player or select their name in the chat log, open their context menu (right-click with mouse, or X button on gamepad) and choose Invite to Party.

Joining Free Companies

A Free Company, similar to a guild, is a community of up to 512 players. Free Trial players cannot join Free Companies. To join one, you can open a player's context menu and choose View Company Profile, then click Submit Application. Be aware that some Free Companies may be closed and not accepting applications. Another way to find a Free Company is to use the official Community Finder.
