How to Defeat Black Star and Black Chocobos in "The Black Regiment" Critical Encounter
At the start of the battle, Black Chocobos will attack. Use multi-target attacks on them until they are defeated.
After that, untargetable black chocobos will appear around the edges of the area. They will all do a line attack. Find a spot where you are not in front of any of these chocobos so you will be standing in a safe spot when they attack. Another set of targetable Black Chocobos will appear toward the end of their line attack casts, so use multi-target attacks on them.
After they are gone, untargetable flying black chocobos will appear. After they float into the air, more targetable Black Chocobos will appear, so use multi-target attacks on them, but keep an eye on the flying black chocobos. Each flying chocobo will have a line pointing straight down from them to the ground. After a moment, there will be a circle attack centered on each of those lines, so keep your distance from the lines. The flying chocobos will move to different locations and do circle attacks again like before. They will do this several times.
A large black chocobo called Black Star will appear. Keep attacking it throughout the battle. It will cast Choco Windstorm, which is a circle attack centered on the chocobo, so move away from it. Then it will cast Choco Cyclone, a donut attack, so get close to the chocobo.
More untargetable chocobos will appear along the edges. Black Star will also begin casting Choco Windstorm, so find a safe spot that isn't in front of any of the chocobos on the edge where you will also be far away from Black Star. Next, flying chocobos will appear, and Black Star will cast Choco Cyclone. Stay close to Black Star but keep as far away from the flying chocobo's lines as you can without getting too far from Black Star.
Choco Slaughter places four circle markers around the boss, with arrows in them, indicating multiple circle attacks that move outward from the boss. Another set of four will appear a moment later in the gaps between the first four. Stand in one of the gaps in the first set of four, then as soon as a circle attack moves past, get behind it so you aren't in the path of the second set of circles. You will also have to dodge Choco Doublades, where there are four cone attacks, then another set of attacks in the safe spots between the first cones. Stand in one of the gaps in the first set, then move to where the initial cone attacks went off. Also keep an eye on the untargetable chocobos that appear around the edges. When you move into the second set of safe spots between the cones, make sure to also find a safe spot that none of the untargetable chocobos is facing. There will also be small circle attacks to dodge after the line attacks from the chocobos on the edges.
Rewards from "The Black Regiment" Critical Encounter
This Critical Encounter has a chance of dropping the Ranger's Soul Shard, which unlocks the Ranger Phantom Job. It also has a chance of dropping the Notes on Black Chocobos. In addition, if you have started the Arcane Artistry quest in Phantom Village, this Critical Encounter has a chance of dropping an Orpiment Demiatma.
