Face Shrine

After you complete the Catfish's Maw dungeon, you receive a hint to go to the shrine. The Face Shrine is north of the Animal Village.

Get the Magnifying Glass

If you don't have the Mermaid Scale, check the Trading Sequence to find out how to get it. Now you can go to the mermaid statue in Martha's Bay using the hookshot. Just go west from Animal Village, then southwest to an area with a wooden crate. Use the Hookshot on the crate on the other side to reach the statue. Check on it to put the mermaid scale in place.

When you put the scale in place, it reveals stairs. Go down and then go north to find the Magnifying Lens. When you go south, you will discover that there were hidden monsters in the room.

(Game Boy Version) Get a Photo

In the Game Boy Version, the Magnifying Lens allows you to get more photos. One of them can be obtained in Animal Village. Go to Animal Village and enter the northeast house to get a picture taken.

Get a Piece of Heart

If you bought the bow and have bombs, you can get a Piece of Heart. Northeast of Animal Village, there is a cracked wall. Go south from where Marin is singing to the animals, and follow the path until you can go north. At the end of the path, use a bomb to break open the cave, and go in. Push the rock out of the way and jump over the gap, then jump over the gap to go north in the next room. You will see a Piece of Heart in the corner. Equip Bombs and Arrows, then press both buttons at the same time to shoot a bomb arrow at the cracked boulder across the way. After it's gone, use the Hookshot to go across the gap and get the Piece of Heart.

Since you can't use the Hookshot to go back the way you came, you will need to jump off of the ledge where you got the Piece of Heart, but you might want to go to the south side of the barrier below to kill the Zols that appeared. Then jump down from the ledge and go east. Bomb the wall at the end, and jump across the gap or use the Hookshot, and leave the cave.

(Game Boy Version) Get Another Photo

Go back to the fisherman under the bridge in southeastern Martha's Bay and talk to him to get a picture taken.

Get the Boomerang

Now that you have the Magnifying Lens, go to the area south of the monkey that is throwing coconuts. Bomb the cracked wall and go inside. Talk to the monster behind the table. This Goriya will trade a good item to you in exchange for whatever you have set to your B button. Put an item into your B button that you don't think that you will need (the shovel is probably a good choice) and talk to the Goriya. It will give you the Boomerang. The boomerang is even more powerful than the L-2 sword, which you can get from the Seashell Mansion after you collect enough Secret Seashells. In the Game Boy version, you can give the Goriya the boomerang if you want your item back later. In the Nintendo Switch version, you can just pay Goriya 300 rupees to get your item back.

Buy the Bow

If you haven't bought the Bow from the Mabe Village shop yet, it is recommended to do so now if you can afford it.

Southern Face Shrine

Now go to the Face Shrine, which is north of the Animal Village. On your way, the owl appears and tells you to go to the south Face Shrine first.

From where the owl talked to you, go east to an area with boulders. In the Nintendo Switch version, lift the boulders on the right and go to the northeast corner of the area to find a boulder in the corner. Lift it up to find a Secret Seashell.

Go southeast to find the southern shrine area. Go south all the way, then west. Touch the statue at the far left to make it move. Go past where it was, then take the upper path.

Go north, then touch the statues on the right. Go east past them, then touch the bottom-right statue to make it move. Go down the stairs under it and open the chest to get a Secret Seashell. If you are playing the Game Boy version, check if you have at least 20 Secret Seashells now. If so, the next time you go to Seashell Mansion, you will get the L-2 sword. This is helpful in the next battle, so you might want to take a detour to get it if you have enough shells.

From the cave in the South Face Shrine where you got the Secret Seashell, leave the cave and go west. Touch the statues on the left. Go past them, then go south, then west. Touch the statues that are blocking the path to the stairs, then go past them and go up the stairs. Go into the building.

Armos Knight

Inside, lift the pots to get some arrows, then go north. You must battle an Armos Knight. If you are playing the Game Boy version and have the L-2 Sword, just hit it repeatedly with the sword until it dies. Otherwise, use Spin Attacks to damage it. Jump before it crashes to the floor so that you won't get stunned when it lands. After its shield is destroyed, you can hit it with arrows if you have any. Also, you can charge Spin Attacks while jumping, so be sure to do so when it starts jumping more often. After you have damaged it enough times, its armor comes off. You can use regular sword attacks at that point to damage it.

After the Armos Knight is defeated, it leaves behind the Face Key.

Read the Tablet

Go north and use Magic Powder to light the torches, then read the tablet up above. You learn something interesting about Koholint Island. After you are done reading the tablet, press a button. Then you can leave the shrine.

Outside, the owl will say more about what you learned.

Now leave the southern shrine. Go northwest, and you will see a cracked wall. It just leads to a Fairy Fountain.

River Rapids Raft Ride

If you don't mind a detour, there is a minigame that you can access now. You can get rupees, items (i.e. bombs, arrows, hearts, and Magic Powder), and in the Nintendo Switch version, you can get a Piece of Heart and a Secret Seashell from this minigame. (If you are not interested, skip to Go to the Northern Shrine below.)

To go to the minigame, go down the northern stairs into the water and swim east. Go up the stairs and enter the cave. Go north and jump down from the ledge and go up the stairs.

Go into the building and you can pay 100 rupees to play the minigame. (It may seem expensive, but you can win many rupees during the minigame.) Go outside and get on the raft, then go west. You will eventually see a waterfall and the current will become strong. There is also a second waterfall, west of the first.

There will be many flying items that you can get by jumping with the Roc's Feather, so be sure to equip it.

At the end of the minigame, after the raft falls down the big waterfall in the southeast, go west in the water. You can either go up the first stairs to go back and play the minigame again, or you can go west and go down the stairs to dry land.

Go to the Northern Shrine

Go down the southern stairs into the water. Go south and swim onto the island with the statues. Touch the statue on the left to make it move. Stun it with the Boomerang or Hookshot, then kill it with the Boomerang or arrows, or lure it into the water so it drowns, then go down the stairs.

Go west past the Piranhas, then go west to the next area. Use the Hookshot on the rock to get across. Go up the stairs.

Go northeast and, in the Nintendo Switch version, check on the keyhole to unlock the shrine. In Game Boy version, push on the keyhole to unlock the shrine. Go back the way you came and go up the stairs, then enter the shrine.

Get the Power Bracelet Level 2

From the entrance, go west. There are Wizzrobes in this room that disappear and reappear in the same place. You can only harm them with arrows or bombs. It takes four arrows (only two in the Nintendo Switch version), or one bomb. They can be stunned with the Hookshot, the Boomerang, or Magic Powder. If you kill them, the door opens and you can go through to get 50 rupees.

Back in the Wizzrobe room, use the northwest exit. Make your way past the Mini-Moldorm and Spark, then follow the path to a room with a crystal switch and a Shy Guy. Put a bomb on the switch, then quickly go near the northeast exit and wait for the bomb to make the blocks come up. Use the northeast exit.

Put a bomb on the east wall between the two torches. Go through the hole that opens.

Go around the room and kill the four hidden green Zols. Stairs will appear. Go down.

Carefully go west, avoiding the Giant Bubbles that bounce around. In the west area, go up the ladder on the left side of the room.

In the upstairs room, the blocks should be down. Kill the Mini-Moldorm and the Wizzrobes. Then go through the north door.

Open the chest to get the Power Bracelet L-2.

Use the Power Bracelet to lift the statues in the middle of the room, then use the one-way door in the north wall.

Get the Map

Hit the switch to lower the blocks, then put a bomb on the switch and go toward the northwest exit, but wait for the bomb to make the blocks come up, then go through the northwest exit this time.

Lift the pot in the northwest corner of the room to find a button. Step on it to open the west door. Go through it.

Kill the Wizzrobes. You can use an arrow to hit the crystal switch in the corner so you can reach all of the Wizzrobes.

When the Wizzrobes are gone, a chest appears. Open the chest to get the Map.

Get the Stone Beak

Go north, then east. Open the chest to get the Stone Beak.

Get the Compass

Go back to the previous room and throw a pot at the door to open it. Go through.

Go east to the next room. Open the chest to get the Compass.

Get a Key

Go up the stairs and hit the crystal switch, then follow the path to a room with a Bubble floating around. You can kill the Bubble with Magic Powder. There are two Wizzrobes here. Kill them and a key will fall. Take it.

Get 100 Rupees

Go back the way you came until you reach a room with two Sparks and two big statues. Throw one of the big statues at the north door (go back to the Compass room and hit the crystal switch if the blocks are in the way). Go through the door that you threw the big statue at.

Open the chest to get 100 rupees.

Get a Secret Seashell

Go up the stairs to the north to reach a hidden island in the overworld. Open the chest there to get a Secret Seashell. In the Game Boy version, if you already got the L-2 Sword from the Seashell Mansion, the chest contains 20 rupees instead.

Get Another 100 Rupees

Go back down the stairs into the dungeon. If the blocks on the left are raised, jump off of the ledge near the stairs and hit the crystal to lower them.

Then, in the Nintendo Switch version, throw the knight chess pieces so they land in the marked tiles on the floor; when you throw one, it lands two squares away from the square you were standing on when you threw it, then bounces diagonally in the direction it is facing. In the Game Boy version, throw one of the horse heads, then throw the other. If both landed upright, the door will open. If not, try again. It may take many tries. This makes the south door open. Go through.

In the room with the two Sparks and two big statues, the raised blocks are blocking the path south (if not, go to the previous room and use the Hookshot to hit the crystal switch, then come back to this room with the two Sparks and two big statues), then go to the southwest corner, then jump off the right side and go south.

Keep going south until you can't go farther south. If the east exit is blocked, go to the southeast corner of the room and shoot the crystal with an arrow, then throw a bomb at the crystal or shoot an arrow at it and hurry to the east side of the room so that the blocks near the east exit go up before you leave. Go east.

Go south to the room with the Shy Guy. If the blocks are raised and preventing you from entering the room, go back to the Wizzrobe room and shoot the crystal with an arrow, then return to the Shy Guy room and hit the crystal switch to make the blocks go back up.

Go southeast, then south until you can't go farther south. If the northeast door isn't open, kill the Wizzrobes and go through the northeast door. Open the chest if you didn't before, then lift the big statue and go through the north door.

Open the chest to get 100 Rupees. Then go through the west door.

Get a Secret Medicine

Once again, go southeast, then south until you can't go farther south, but this time go east (past the dungeon entrance room) until you reach a room with conveyor belts. Walk across the conveyor belts, being careful to avoid the Traps. Go east from the conveyor belt room.

Raise your shield to avoid getting hurt by the flying tiles. When all the tiles are gone, the north door will stay open. Go through.

Lift one of the big statues and throw it at the east door to open it. Go through.

Kill the four Wizzrobes in this room to open the doors. If you have a Secret Medicine already, go through the north door, go down the stairs, then follow the path through the shallow water to reach a chest that contains a key. Then skip to Reach the Mini-Boss below. If you don't have a Secret Medicine and want to get one (it is a one-time use item that restores all of your hearts if you die) then go through the the south door.

If you can't reach the stairs in the southwest part of the room, you will have to go back and hit the crystal switch in the room with the Shy Guy. If you can reach the stairs in the southwest part of the room, go up them and fall onto the raised blocks, then use the Roc's Feather to jump to the next raised block. Go up the stairs, then jump over the Trap and make your way to the northeast exit.

In the next room, if you are playing the Nintendo Switch version, open the chest to get a Secret Medicine (you will automatically put it back if you already have one). In the Game Boy version, if you already have a Secret Medicine, don't open this chest. If you do, the Secret Medicine in the chest will be wasted. This item will automatically refill all of your hearts if you die, then it will disappear. You can buy more from Crazy Tracy, who randomly sells it for either 28 or 42 rupees.

Get a Second Key

Jump down from the ledge, then go north to the next room.

Go down the stairs, then follow the path through the shallow water to reach a chest that contains a key.

Reach the Mini-Boss

Go back the way you came until you can go west. When you go west you reach a room with a locked door in the north wall. Go through that door.

Put a bomb in the middle of the north wall, then go through the hole that appears.

Mini-Boss: Smasher

If Smasher picks up the ball, run away to try to avoid the ball when Smasher throws it. Use the Power Bracelet to lift the ball before Smasher reaches it, and throw it at Smasher. Repeat this until Smasher dies. When Smasher is gone, go through the north door.

Get a Third Key

Lift the statue on the left to reveal stairs. Go down.

Go down the ladder, but press Up to grab the lower ladder to avoid falling onto the spikes. Use the Roc's Feather to jump over the spinning Spark, then carefully jump toward the next platform and press Up to grab the small ladder. When the other Spark is out of the way, go down to the platform and jump to the left, then go left to the next area.

Go to the top of each ladder and press left to fall toward the next one. Press up to grab the next ladder. Do this until you reach the ladder on the left side of the room. Go up.

Equip your shield and raise it to avoid getting hit by the flying tiles. When all the tiles are gone, a key appears. Jump to it, then jump to the northeast corner and open the key block. Go north.

Get the Nightmare's Key

Lift the big statue and throw it at the door to open it, then go through.

Pick up all the jars, then in the Nintendo Switch version, throw the knight chess pieces so they land in the marked tiles on the floor; when you throw one, it lands two squares away from the square you were standing on when you threw it, then bounces diagonally in the direction it is facing. In the Game Boy version, throw one of the horse heads, then throw the other. If both landed upright, the doors will open. If not, try again. It may take many tries. Go through the west exit.

Go down the stairs.

Use the Pegasus Boots to dash past the Thwomps, then go up the ladder in the east area.

Use bombs to kill the Pols Voices. You can go north from here to get bombs, hearts, and, in the Nintendo Switch version, 300 rupees, or in the Game Boy version, 200 rupees. Throw the chess knights as before to open the door.

Then go south until you reach a room with Dodongo Snakes. Put a bomb in front of the Dodongo Snakes to make them eat the bombs. Repeat this until they die. Go through the door that opens. If you don't have enough bombs, jump to the stairs in the northeast corner and go north, then go north again to find some flying bombs. There are also hearts and rupees in the next room.

In the room west of the Dodongo Snakes, use the Hookshot to go over the gap. Then unlock the key block and go north. Keep going north to an area with a chest. Throw a pot at it to open it. You get the Nightmare's Key.

Reach the Nightmare

Go back the way you came and jump off the ledge into the shallow water. Go south, then go up the stairs and make your way to the south door. Go through.

In the next room, if the west door is closed, kill the Wizzrobes. Then go west through the door.

Go north, then go north again through the hole in the wall. Go north once more, then pick up the big statue on the left (if any). Go down the stairs.

Follow the path like you did before. When you reach the room with the flying tiles, go through the south door.

This room has a Vacuum Mouth, and the doors are closed. To make the doors open, you have to kill the hidden green Zols in the room. There is one above, below, to the left, and to the right of the Vacuum Mouth. Carefully go toward the walls, trying not to get pulled into the hole by the Vacuum Mouth, in order to make the four hidden Zols appear. When you have killed all the Zols (or they have all fallen into the hole) go through the east door that opens.

Push the lower block to the right. Then kill the Wizzrobe on the northern platform. You can equip both bombs and the bow, then if you press both buttons at the same time, you will shoot a bomb. You can use this technique to kill the Wizzrobe more easily.

After the Wizzrobe is dead, the doors open. Jump to the northern part of the room, but don't let the Beamos look at you, because it will shoot a laser at you if it sees you. Go to the right side of the northern platform and push the block into the hole, then go north through the door.

If you light the two torches in this room with Magic Powder, the two spinning Sparks will turn into fairies.

When you're ready, go north through the Nightmare Door.

Facade

Use a bomb on Facade's face to hurt it. Then it will disappear. When it reappears, use another bomb on it. Avoid the flying tiles and pots. When the tiles and pots are gone, holes will start to appear in the floor. Move around to avoid those, or stay near the wall. When Facade is gone, take the Heart Container and go north.

Get the Musical Instrument

Go to the next room to get the Coral Triangle. The next hint tells you to go to the mountain.
