Norfair: Get the Grappling Beam and Wave Beam

With the Speed Booster and Power Bombs, you can now reach the Grappling Beam and Wave Beam upgrade in Norfair.

With the Speed Booster and Power Bombs, you can now reach the Grappling Beam and Wave Beam upgrade in Norfair.

Get the Norfair Map

Go down to the second door on the left. Use a Power Bomb to open it, then go through and you can get the map of Norfair. Then exit the room. You can optionally go down and use the door on the right to reach a save room. After you use the save room, go through the door on the left.

Get A Missile Tank

Go back up to the first two doors and go through the one on the left. Run to the left to get past the closing gates, then at the leftmost side of the room, use a Power Bomb to break a hole in the floor. Go down through it, then go to the left and kill some of the Mellas and small Dessgeegas. Before you go through the door on the left, be aware that the next room has platforms made of Pit Blocks, as well as a Missile Tank near the upper-left corner of the room. One way to get it is to shoot open the door on the left in this room where there were Mellas and small Dessgeegas, then do a horizontal Shinespark through the door, and when you hit the left wall of the dark red room, shoot the left wall to reveal the Missile Tank, and push to the left to take it before you fall. It is also possible to freeze the Sovas in the room and use wall jumps, or do quick jumps off of the Pit Blocks before they disappear, to reach it.

After you have gotten the Missile Tank from the top of the Pit Block room (or not), go to the bottom of the room and go through the door.

Reach a Mini-Boss

Run to the right to Speed Boost through Multiviolas and red Space Pirates and Speed Boost blocks. You will end up near a door in the floor and a door to the right. If you want to save the game, then ignore these doors and go upward to reach a door on the right, which leads to a save room. Exit the save room when you are done. Then go back down to the doors and you can optionally go through the door on the right, then keep going to the right to find an energy recharge room. Otherwise, go back to the left and shoot a Super Missile at the door in the floor to open it. Go through.

Crocomire

Go to the right to find Crocomire. Whenever it opens its mouth, shoot its mouth with missiles or charged shots. This will push it back. The stronger the weapon you shoot it with, the farther it will move back. Don't use Power Bombs, because this will just make Crocomire charge toward you.

You can aim diagonally upward to shoot into Crocomire's mouth, but it is not recommended to do so if Crocomire is spitting out blobs, because you will waste your ammo hitting those blobs instead of Crocomire's mouth. The blobs may drop energy and items if you shoot them.

Throughout the battle, Crocomire will try to move toward you, and if you get pushed too far, you will be crushed against spikes in the left side of the room.

The farther you push it back, the quicker it is to start moving toward you again. Keep shooting its mouth to push it farther back, until finally it falls into the acid.

Afterward, go to the left. The room will start shaking, and eventually the wall spikes will shoot toward you. After that, collect the health and missiles that eventually appear, then go to the left and go through the door.

Get the Grappling Beam

Go down to the bottom of the room. You can shoot the Gamets that come out of the ground to replenish health and missiles and bombs. Then use the door on the right to save the game, then exit the save room.

Go to the bottom-left corner of the room and shoot the door in the floor. Go through.

Ignore the door on the left, because it leads to a dead end. Instead, fall down below. Shoot the door on the right with five Missiles and go through. Wait for the acid to recede, then run to the right. Roll through the tunnel, jump over the spikes, and go to the right to find a Missile Tank. Then exit this room the way you came in.

Go to the bottom of the tall room and shoot the door open and fall in.

Use a Power Bomb to destroy the blocks near where you entered the room, then go to the right side and run to the left to Speed Boost. Jump when you reach the top of the ramp, and you should reach a door on the left side of the room. Shoot it and go through.

Shoot the item that the Chozo Statue is holding and you will reveal the Grappling Beam. Take it, and you will be able to select the Grappling Beam with the SELECT button. After you select Grappling Beam, press and hold the attack button to latch onto certain things. You will let go if you stop pressing the attack button. While holding onto something with the Grappling Beam, you can swing back and forth, and use the momentum to launch yourself forward.

Get the Wave Beam

Before you continue on, you can go to the previous room and use the Grappling Beam on the Rippers that are flying back and forth near the ceiling of this room, and swing from one to the next to reach the upper-right corner, where there is a Missile Tank. Or you can do a Speed Boost in the area below, then crouch, walk into the acid on the left, and press the jump button to do a Shinespark up to the area with the Missile Tank. Afterward, you can roll into the tunnel on the right to fall through a hole down to the bottom of the room.

Do a Speed Boost to go back to the bottom-left corner of the room as before, and go through the door there to return to the room with the Chozo Statue that was holding the Grappling Beam.

Jump up the ledges behind the Chozo Statue. Use the Grappling Beam on the grapple blocks in the ceiling and swing to the door. Go through.

In this room, use the Grappling Beam on the grapple blocks to get past the water, then go through the door on the right.

Go upward, avoiding the flames that the Funes spit out. Go as far up as you can, then jump upward to see some grapple blocks in the ceiling. Jump and use the Grapple Beam on the blocks to be pulled up to them, then swing to the ledge and go through the door.

Swing across the two pits of water, then shoot a Super Missile at the light on the gate, then go through the door on the right.

Shoot the door in the ceiling and jump up through it.

Go to the upper-right of this room and use the Grappling Beam on the Ripper to the left. Swing across to the upper-left of the room and shoot the door with five Missiles, then go through and take the Power Bomb Tank, then leave the room.

Go to the upper-right of the room and go through the door, and you will be back in the room where you fought Crocomire. Go to the rightmost side of the room and use the Grappling Beam, while holding the "aim diagonally up" button, to swing across the grapple blocks in the ceiling and go past the pool of acid. If you fall, you can aim the Grappling Beam straight up. On the right side of the room, you will find an Energy Tank. Swing back across and go through the door in the ceiling.

Go upward, save in the save room if you wish, then exit the save room and go to the top of the room. Go through the door on the left. Go upward until you can't go any farther, kill the Geruta that is bouncing around, then go to the left to find some grapple blocks in the ceiling. Swing across to get a Missile Tank. Ignore the gate on the left. Swing to the right, and go to the bottom-right part of the room. Go through the door.

Go down to the bottom of the room, then go through the door on the right. Keep going to the right and you will reach an energy recharge station. Go through the door on the right and you will reach a room with spikes under lava. Use the Grappling Beam to swing to the right. Beware of the Yapping Maws beneath the lava. They will try to catch you as you go along. Go through the door on the right.

Shoot the light on the gate, then roll through the tunnel on the right. Go up to the top of the room and go through the door on the right.

As before, quickly go to the right side, then roll through the tunnel, shoot the middle of the ceiling, then go up the ledges and go through the door at the top.

Go to the left across the Trippers, crouching to avoid the spikes. Go through the door on the left side of the room.

If you didn't get the Wave Beam earlier, go up to the second door on the right. Shoot it with five Super Missiles and go through. Carefully jump from platform to platform, then shoot the light on the gate and go through. Get the Missile Tank, then use the Grappling Beam to go to the upper-right of the room. Shoot the door with five Missiles and go through.

Shoot the item that the Chozo Statue is holding and take the Wave Beam. This beam can shoot through walls. Leave this room the way you came in, then go to the left and exit this room through either of the doors in the left wall.

Go up and use the upper-left door. Go upward until you see grapple blocks in the ceiling on the left. If you want a couple of Missile Tanks and a Reserve Tank, use the Grappling Beam on the ceiling to reach the door in the upper-left corner of the room. Shoot it with a Super Missile and go through to get a Missile Tank. You can make an elevator rise up in this room by either using a Power Bomb or by shooting your beam at the floor in the bottom-left corner of the room. Get on the elevator and use a bomb when it stops, and you will open a hole in the wall. Roll to the left and you find a door. Go through.

Go to the left side of the room and shoot the item to find a Reserve Tank. This will store extra energy, and you can set it to either automatically refill your energy when it reaches 0, or set it to manual. If it is set to manual, you can recharge your energy from the status screen in the pause menu by selecting "reserve tank".

After you get the Reserve Tank, shoot the leftmost small platform to find a hidden Missile Tank. Then go through the door on the right.

Jump up through the ceiling and go to the right. Shoot the wall, then roll through the tunnel. Go to the right and go through the door. Go down to the third door in the left wall (the one below the save room door) and go through.

Make your way to the left through several rooms, until you are in the room with the elevator at the top. Go to the top and use the elevator to return to Brinstar.
