A guide to completing World 1-3 in Super Mario Land for Nintendo Game Boy.
Secret Elevator
You can optionally go to the left, just before the low ceiling, and jump to reveal a hidden block that contains an Elevator. You can jump onto the leftmost ? block and from there jump onto the Elevator. It will take you to the top of the screen, where you can go to the right to get a lot of coins. If you went this way, skip ahead to After the Coins.
No Shortcut
If you decide not to take the shortcut, you can hit the three ? blocks to get coins, then go to the right and you will find a pipe with a Piranha Plant going up and down. If you stand next to the pipe with the Piranha Plant, it will hide in the pipe until you move away from it. You can hit it with a Superball to get rid of it, or you can just wait for it to go down in to the pipe before you jump on the pipe.
As you go to the right, beware of two differently-colored bricks in the ceiling. These will fall downward when you get close to them. They will hurt you if they hit you. To the right of those bricks, there is a Piranha Plant.
Keep going to the right, and you will see coins on the bricks above you.
After the Coins
Just after these coins, there is a Piranha Plant going up and down in a tall pipe. You can go down this pipe to reach a hidden room with coins and bricks. The second brick from the bottom right contains coins. The middle brick of the middle set of bricks contains a Mushroom or Flower. If you broke the bricks in any of these platforms, you can hold B to run across, and you'll automatically go over the gaps.
After the coin room, jump over the gap on the right, then go carefully past the pipes. The first, third, and fourth pipes have Piranha Plants in them.
After that, there are three ? blocks that each contain a coin, but beware of the differently-colored bricks in the ceiling. As before, they will fall when you get close, and will hurt you if they hit you.
To the right of that, there are three more ? blocks, as well as a Gao (sphinx) that spits fireballs downward. You can jump onto it or hit it with a Superball to get rid of it. Note that there is also a secret elevator if you hit the rightmost brick between the ? blocks and then jump again. The hidden brick is just above the brick that you broke. Walk onto the elevator and you will go up onto the ceiling. From there, go to the right and go down the pipe to find a hidden coin room.
In the coin room, there is also a hidden 1-UP Heart. To get it, jump and hit the rightmost brick, and keep hitting the bricks above that by jumping onto the brick platform that has the coins on it and jumping from there. The upper-right brick contains the Heart. You will need to make a running jump to reach it.
After the coin room, go down to land on the pyramid. To the right, don't go too far. There is a narrow gap that you can go through if you're regular-sized Mario, and the reward is a lot of coins, and a Mushroom to restore you to Super Mario size. If you aren't already small, you can hit the bricks that are underneath the ? blocks, then let the Koopa hit you to make you small. Then you can go into that gap, be careful not to get hit by the falling bricks, get all the coins, and hit the ? block to get the Mushroom. Then you can hit the bricks in the right side of the pyramid roof to get out of the area.
To the right, jump over the gap, and there are a lot of bricks. The brick that is two bricks to the left of the upper-right brick contains a Mushroom or Flower.
To the right of that, jump over or run across the Dropping Lifts. After that, there is a pit of lava, and a Gao that spits fireballs in your direction. Jump onto it or hit it with a Superball to get rid of it.
Farther to the right, there is another Gao. After that, you face the boss of Birabuto Kingdom: King Totomesu.
King Totomesu
You can either hit King Totomesu with five Superballs, or just get past him and jump onto the switch to the right of the bridge. King Totomesu will jump up and down and will breathe fireballs that go straight across the screen.
After
After you get past King Totomesu, you will find Daisy. Then you will continue on to World 2-1 in the Muda Kingdom.
