Why do you Need an Email Address?

Randomly-generated Gravatars are based on email address. You have to submit your email address to prove that you actually have access to that email address. This is to discourage people from using arbitrary Gravatars, which defeats the purpose of the Gravatar.

What's a Gravatar?

A Gravatar is a unique avatar based on your email address that can be used on any web site. Gravatar's service includes randomly-generated avatars called Identicon, MonsterID, Wavatar, and Retro, which are generated based on your email address and therefore should be unique to that email address. You can also use Gravatar.com to upload an image to use as your gravatar.
