The Lower Levels of Moria

This page guides you through the Lower Levels of Moria, an optional dungeon in Tales of Phantasia.

Prepare

If you don't have any Holy Bottles, buy at least one (you will find out why later), and also buy 15 Dark Bottles. Get 15 of all healing and recovery items.

Use a Rune Bottle on all of your Gummies to turn them into more powerful versions, then buy more Rune Bottles and more of the regular Gummies.

You can optionally use the Combo Command for an extra challenge.

Get the Emerald Ring and Sapphire Ring if you haven't already. The Emerald Ring is in Gnome's Cave, and the Sapphire's Ring is in Undine's Cave. See New Rings and New Spirits for more information.

Best Equipment

Equip Arche with a Dark Robe. Equip Cless/Cress with a Jade Ring and a Gorgon Amulet. If you have more Jade Rings, use Rune Bottles on them to turn them into Fairy Rings. Equip all of your magic users with a Mystical Rune and a Fairy Ring.

Have Cless/Cress use Soul Wave as his primary short range skill, and Teleport as his secondary short range skill. Have him use Soul Edge and Teleport for his long range skills.

Tell your spell casters not to cast spells, because you will either want to cast spells manually or adjust their tactics during battle. Disable all of Klarth/Claus's summons except for Origin and Aska, and disable all of Arche's spells except for Tidal Wave, Explode, and whatever her best death spell currently is.

Go into Moria and the guard will let you pass. Go north and west, then go down the stairs that take you straight down to the ninth floor.

From there, go to the northeast room. You can purchase items from the woman across from the stairs leading down. It is recommended to purchase Seafood. You can also rest for free in the tent above.

The music will drop a step in pitch when you go down the stairs, and will drop another step each time you go to a lower level.

If you are ready, go down the stairs.

Beware the Urchin

One of the enemies that you can encounter in the lower levels of Moria is a small, brownish-yellow worm with green spikes of fur on it. It is called Urchin. It cannot be killed by anything but Mahjong Tiles, which are too rare and valuable to use here. If Urchin touches you, it kills you instantly. Therefore, if you encounter it, run away immediately.

Because of the Urchin threat, do not let Cless/Cress attack until you know what type of enemy you are fighting.

Enemy Strategies

Monster TypeStrategy
AhlakolaDon't let Cless/Cress use Teleport. Your spell-casters should be set to cast many spells.
BansheeYour spell-casters should be set to cast many spells.
Beast ManIf there are Tusk Boars with Beast Man, turn off all spells. Cast all spells directly on Beast Man. Otherwise, if there is a Manticor with Beast Man, set tactic to cast many spells. Beast Man is likely to cast Summon Lich before you can stop him.
BigfootSet tactic to cast many spells. Cless/Cress should stay far away and only use a regular slice attack without jumping.
D. FlowerCast many spells. Don't let D. Flower cast any spells, because it will use Death Scream, which has a chance of killing all of you.
Hell LordCast many spells.
Ice ChildCast many spells.
IshisuDisable all spells. Have Cless/Cress get close to it and attack it with his weapon whenever it appears.
ManticorCast many spells.
MimmUse Origin. Don't let Cless/Cress attack at all. Just use spells against her.
SokuramCast many spells.
Tusk BoarHave Cless/Cress use Soul Wave to try to stop Tusk Boar from constantly hitting him. Don't use magic on Tusk Boars unless they are all close to a Beast Man.
UrchinRun away.
Wild WolfUse Origin. Do not use Tidal Wave or Explode. There is a chance that Black Hole will kill it.
YuinaruCast many spells.

Level Up on the Ninth Floor

Because of the difficulty of this dungeon, it is recommended to reach at least level 75 before continuing. The ninth floor is a good place to do this because it is close to the free tent upstairs. Use the tent instead of Gummies to heal up.

Items to Look For While Leveling

Beast Man and Sokuram sometimes drop a ?Bow that turns into a Berserker Bow, which is Chester's best bow. Bigfoot sometimes drops Ivory Tusks. Try to get at least four Ivory Tusks.

Moving On

When you feel that you are at a high enough level, go back and rest, and buy any items that you think that you might need. If you were using a Dark Bottle to help with leveling, be sure to let the effect wear off before continuing, or just use a Holy Bottle (but make sure that you have at least one Holy Bottle after that). Then go back down to the 10th level.

Moria B10

Go through the cave to the left. Your Holy Bottles will shatter. Alphabetize your items list and check for glitched items after this.

Keep going to the left, then go down the stairs.

Moria B11

Exit to the right, then keep going to the right, and go down all of the stairs.

Moria B12

Go to the left, then go down both sets of stairs. The chest at the top is a Yellow Cake, and the bottom chests from left to right are Veggies, a Dark Bottle, and an Orange Gummy/Orange Gel/Orange Gummi. Go back up and exit to the right.

Moria B13

Go to the right, then get the Spy Lens/Magic Lens, then go down. There is a Flare Bottle to the left of the stairs and a Life Bottle to the right. Go down the stairs.

Moria B14

Exit to the left, the keep going left, then go down the stairs.

Moria B15

Exit to the right, then keep going right, then go down both stairs, and exit to the left.

Moria B16

Go to the left, and keep going left, then go down both stairs. Go to the right, avoiding the Shoki/Miasma, then open the chest that is in the crevice in the wall to get a Dark Bottle. If you have 15 Creamy Cheese, use one, then go to the chest against the left wall. From there, go down and get the Sage. Then go to the right until you hear something. You will make a contract with Chameleon. It is a death spell, but it has a low success rate, so just disable it for now. Then exit, and go to the right to exit.

Moria B17

Go to the right. In the next room, there is a puzzle, but there is also a transporter back to the 10th level. Make sure not to accidentally step on it!

You will not encounter enemies in this room, so you can fill your food sack and walk around to heal yourselves up.

The switches from left to right are 1, 2, 3, 4. Step on them in this order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 2. The door directly south will open. Go through and keep going down, and go down the stairs.

Moria B18

Do not use your candle, torch, or lantern here. You can if you want this part to be easier, but you will not be able to complete a side-quest later.

This is a big, complicated room. If you want a map, please visit RPG Classics's Moria Floor 18 Map. Otherwise, follow the instructions below.

Go straight down from the stairs until you hit the wall. Walk left, and when you can, go straight down until you're blocked by a rock. Now go right, and when you see a narrow passage below you, go straight down it until you see stairs. Go down them, and as soon as you can, go left until you hit the wall. Go up until you see a cave opening. Go through and open the chest. This is one of Arche's best death spells. Cancel any other death spell she's been using thus far, and have her ready to cast Black Hole in addition to the other spells that she has been using in Moria. Now go back to the dark room.

Now you should go back to where you entered the room. To do that, go down, keeping the right wall in your view the entire time, until you reach the stairs. Go straight up. After you have gone through the narrow passage, go left and up, then when you can, go right.

When you see the entrance stairs above you, go to the right. You will see a path going down. Start going down that path, but stop before the stairs. Go to the right. When you hit the wall with the torch in it, walk above that piece of wall, then go up. When you hit the wall, go right and keep going until you hit the far wall. Go down, then when you can, go right, and when you can, go up to the next screen. The chests are (left) Bread, (top) Apple Gummy/Apple Gel/Apple Gummi (use one if you have 15, because someone probably needs it), and don't get the treasure on the right (Iron Gloves), unless you want to sell it later. Now go back out.

Go down, then left, and down the stairs that you see. From there, go right, going down and then right when you have to, and you reach a cave opening in the wall. Go through. The only treasure worth getting in here is the Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel. If you already have 15 of them, use one on Cless/Cress, who probably needs the TP. The chests in this room are (left) Iron Circlet, (top) Broom, (right) Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel. Go back out.

Go left, then go up and around the torch wall, then when you have gone past the torch wall, go down, and then go left until you see a wall to the left. Go down, and if you are blocked by a wall, go a little to the left, then go down again, but don't go down the stairs. Instead, go left, then go down and left to reach the stairs to the next level.

Moria B19

If you want a map of this floor, please visit RPG Classics's Moria Floor 19 Map. Otherwise, follow the instructions below.

You will start encountering WildWolves here, so switch Arche's tactic to not cast spells, because Tidal Wave and Explode don't work on WildWolves.

If you want a Silver Cape and an ?Armor that becomes a Tunic, go a little bit down from the stairs, then right, and down when you can. The Silver Cape is first, and the ?Armor is second. From there, just go through the passage to return to where you entered the room.

Now, if you want a Poison Amulet, go left, past the first two passages down, and go down the third one. Make your way downward. The chest is at the bottom. From there, go back up until you are near the top of the screen. Go right, and go down the first passage that you reach.

If you didn't want the Poison Amulet, go left from the entrance and go down the second passageway down. From there, go left, and when you hit the wall, go up and left, then go down. When you hit the torch wall, go right and down, and go down the stairs. From there, go right, and go down the rightmost passage. The chest are (l to r) Lotus Perfume, Pine Gummy. Go back out.

Go up the passage, then go left, and go down the first passage that you reach. Don't open the chest at the bottom of this passage, because it is a ?Weapon that becomes a Longsword. From the chest, go all the way to the left, then go up until you reach the exit to the left. Continue going left and open the chest on the way. It is a ?Weapon that becomes a Bahamut's Tail, which is more powerful than the Eternal Sword. Equip it on Cless/Cress right away. Keep going left.

Now there's no circle of light around you, and there will only occasionally be a flash of light to show you your surroundings. Fortunately, you can see chests and torches. If you want a map of this area, please visit RPG Classics's Moria Flashing Grid Page. Otherwise, follow the instructions below.

The chest that you can see here is an ?Armor that becomes a Tunic. It is weak armor, so you probably have no use for it.

From the chest, go right, then go down and you will see another chest, which is a Miracle Gummy. If you already have 15 Miracle Gummies, use one on someone who needs it, then get the one from the chest.

Now, go right, and when you have gone past the torches, go up until you see a chest. It contains Cheese.

If you want a Gorgon Amulet, go up and left, and open the chest here. The chest below it cannot be reached from here. If you want a ?Weapon that becomes a Longsword, go left to find one. Now go to the right, beyond the last torch, then go down.

Regardless of whether you got the Gorgon Amulet or not, when you see the four torches, walk left below them. The chest above you is a Poison Amulet.

If you want a Gorgon Amulet, go straight down (if there is a rock in the way, go around it and keep going down). The other three chests will be accessible later. For now, go back to the crossroads.

Regardless of whether you got the second Gorgon Amulet, go left, walking around the small stone if it is in your way. If anyone is low on HP, then at the gap in the torches above you, go up to get a Lemon Gummy.

Then go down to the crossroads below, go left, and at the next crossroads, go up to get a Dragon Steak. If you go straight down from the Dragon Steak, you find a chest that contains ?Armor that becomes a Tunic.

Go back to the nearest crossroads and go left. There is a Resist Ring below.

To get yet another Gorgon Amulet, go straight up until you hit a wall, then go left (go around the stone) to get it. When you look at Cless/Cress you should only be able to see his top half; the wall below is covering the rest of him. Keep walking right until you have gone past that wall and can see the rest of him, and go down.

Regardless of whether you got this third Gorgon Amulet, go left at the crossroads until you hit the wall, then go up to get a Burger.

Stay close to the left wall and start going down. Eventually, there will be a cave opening to your left. It is a little bit below the second set of torches. Go through. The items in this room are (top) Combo Counter, (left) Protect Ring, (right) Rune Bottle. The Combo Counter counts how many times a combo hit the enemy. It is also required to get the title of Combo Master. To use it, go to your Custom menu, and at the bottom, turn Combo Count on. Now leave the room.

If someone needs HP, go down from here to get a Lemon Gummy.

From where you are you see torches to your right. Head up until you see another group of torches, then head up again until you see a third group of torches. Head right in the path that's under those torches.

You'll want to pass the first two crossroads you reach, and go down the third one.

At the next crossroads, head right for a Burger.

Now go left, past the first crossroads, and at the second one go down for the best armor for Cless/Cress in the game, an ?Armor that becomes a Golden Armor. Equip it on him right away.

Go back up to the crossroads. Head left, pass the crossroads and get the Poison Amulet if you want it.

Go back to the last crossroads, and head straight down until you hit a wall. From there go left until you hit a wall, then go up for a Resist Ring.

Now head down until you hit the wall, then go right until you're between the two sets of torches. Go up until you're centered in the next crossroads. Go right until you're at the third crossroads. If you want yet another ?Weapon = Longsword, go up to get one. Otherwise, go down until you hit the wall. From there head right for a Pine Gummy and a Red Savory (it may appear to be blocked, but you can just go around the stone).

Finally, head left, and keep looking at the wall below you for the stairs out of here.

Twentieth Floor

If you go in front of where a statue is facing, you get pushed away. That means that there's a specific route for getting out of here. Here's the guide to get out.

Walk south slightly, just enough that when you go left you can clear the wall to the left. When you go left, go past the stalagmites below you, but as soon as you reach the end of the stalagmites, go down. Then as soon as you can, go right, stopping before you get to the statue facing up. From there go down just enough that you can walk under the statue facing up. Next to the statue facing up is a statue facing right. You'll want to walk in front of and get pushed by the statue facing right. From where you end up, go down, right, and walk in front of the statue facing right. From there it's a clear shot walking under the statue facing up, getting the chest (Jade Ring), and going down the stairs.

Twenty-First Floor

First, go right for a Rune Bottle. Then go down those stairs, and you'll see a chest containing a Protect Ring. Finally, go all the way left for a Reverse Doll. Then go all the way right for the cave that takes you to the next room. Head across the bridges.

Head right, then up. When you see the torches, go right and there will be stairs leading down, go down them, and keep going down. The chest to the left is a ?Weapon = Ice Coffin Sword, not worth using a Rune Bottle. A little to the left and below you are some stairs, go down, and get the chest to the right (Jade Ring).

Go down the stairs here (a little to the left), and go down more stairs (also a little to the left) and get the two chests (top to bottom, Elixir, Apple Gummy/Apple Gel/Apple Gummi).

Now make your way back up all those stairs, until you see the piece of wall with those two torches. Go past it (you'll be to the right of it), then when you see the torches in the wall above, go right and down a set of stairs there.

If you want a ?Weapon = Ice Scimitar, keep going down, and when you hit the wall go a little right, and down more stairs. When you hit the wall with the torch in it, go left, then down for the ?Weapon. Then go back up, right, and up the stairs just above the torch wall. When you run into another torch wall, head right, then up.

If you didn't get the Ice Scimitar, then just head right from those stairs, then up.

When you hit the wall, go right. Then when you hit another wall, go up and into a room with chests (l to r Jade Ring, Orange Gummy/Orange Gel/Orange Gummi). Then exit this room.

Go down until you hit the wall, then a little left. There are some stairs in the wall below you that you want to go down. When you do, head right. Stop when you see the chest, because you might not want it. It's just an ?Armor = Reflect Plate.

If you didn't get the ?Armor and it's on the right of the screen, head down and you'll go down some stairs.

If you did get the ?Armor, head left and down, left and down again, until you get down the stairs.

Keep going down until you go down another set of stairs. From there, go left, and you'll see a chest to the left, get it (Hourglass).

From the chest, go down, then right, and up both sets of stairs you just came from. From the top of the stairs head left until you're next to the piece of torch wall. Walking on the right side of the torch wall, go down, and when you hit the wall, go a little left, then down, and you'll go down some stairs.

If you need a ?Helm = Star Cap (you shouldn't), there's another set of stairs almost straight down from the ones you just came down. So just go down, and if you have to, a little to the right, to get down those stairs. You'll see the chest to your left. Then go back up that one set of stairs.

From where you are (regardless of whether you got the ?Helm or not) go left, and when you hit the wall, go down. If you hit a wall while going down, just head left and down again. You'll see a chest to the left, it's an ?Armor = Mithril Mesh which is not worth getting. So go a little left and down some stairs there.

There's a ?Helm within reach (down and to the left) but it's just a Leather Hat. So from the stairs you just came down, go right until you hit a torch wall. Now go straight down, into a new room.

Go down the passage below you until you hear a voice. You will contract with Gremlin. That's the last spirit for Klarth/Claus. Leave Gremlin enabled.

Now, go up the passage you came down, and left and up through the exit.

From here, go up until you hit a stalagmite. Then go right and you'll see a bridge. Cross it. You'll see a chest below you, it's just a Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel, get it if you want it.

Go up, but ignore the cave opening to the right of the torches. Instead, keep going up and there will be some stairs a little to your left. Go up. From the stairs, go up a little, then right through the cave opening.

Follow this path and you will reach a save point.

Up those stairs is a path leading to the Wyvern, the boss of the lower levels of Moria.

In the room with Wyvern, you won't get attacked if you walk around the entrance, so do that until you're all healed up. Replenish everyone's TP as needed.

Then, prepare. Disable all of Arche's spells except Tidal Wave. Disable all of Klarth/Claus's spirits except for Gremlin. In rare cases, Maxwell can do more damage than Gremlin, so you might want to enable Maxwell also. For Cless/Cress, Teleport can be useful. Remember to set Mint to Value HP over TP, and Klarth/Claus and Arche to cast many spells. When you're ready, go up to face the boss.

Wyvern

Use a Flare Bottle on Cless/Cress and have him just use a regular jumping attack. If Wyvern is ever floating above Cless/Cress, have Cless/Cress use Teleport, which will hit Wyvern from underneath a bunch of times. Sometimes Wyvern will make fireballs appear in front of him, but if Cless/Cress has the Golden Armor, they will heal him up completely. Wyvern's most dangerous spell is Explode, but you will likely be too quick to let him cast any spells.

Lower Levels

Go north to the treasure room.

Dwarf Caverns

(left side, bottom to top) Hourglass, Life Bottle, Miracle Gummy, Miracle Gummy, Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel, Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel.

(right side, bottom to top) Elixir, Life Bottle, Miracle Gummy, Miracle Gummy, Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel, Mixed Gummy/Melange Gel.

The treasures on the golden platform are the most valuable. See below for explanations on each of these treasures. (bottom to top, left to right) Scout Orb, ?Weapon = Excalibur, [spell] Extinction, [sword skill] Thor's Wrath.

* Scout Orb - This item is like a combination Holy Bottle/Dark Bottle that never stops working. Select it in your items screen, then you can set the enemy encounter rate to High, Normal, and Low. Set it to low now, since you have to leave the mines the way you came in (but there is a transporter a few levels up, so the journey won't be quite as long). You can also try to use the Scout Orb to avoid enemy encounters entirely. Just set the Orb to Low, walk as far as you think you can go without an enemy encounter, then set it to Normal, then Low. Each time you reset the Orb, the number of steps before an encounter is reset.

* ?Weapon = Excalibur - The most powerful sword in the game.

* Extinction - Arche's best death spell.

* Thor's Wrath - A sword combo for Cless/Cress that combines Lightning Bolt with Tiger Teeth.

To leave the mines, follow the path out, saving at the save point if you need to, until you're back in the dark room.

Twenty-First Floor, part 2

From where you enter the dark room, go a little left, then down the stairs. When you run into the torch wall, walk around it to the right, then cross the bridge to the left.

When you run into this torch wall, go down below it and left, then at the part where the water comes up the highest, go up and the stairs up are around there. Walk up (you might hit the wall before passing the torch wall), and you'll want to go right from the torch wall and up the stairs.

When you hit the torch wall up those stairs, head right and go up some more stairs. Then go left. When you hit the wall, go down a little, and left, then up those stairs. Then go left, past the torch wall, and down. You may run into a wall, if you do just walk right a little. In the left wall is the door.

Cross the bridges. In the room that follows, just head up the stairs you see above you, head left to the second torch wall, then up the stairs.

Twentieth Floor, part 2

Head left and walk in front of the statue facing left. From there just walk up the stairs.

Nineteenth Floor

Head up until you hit the wall. Then head right and go up between the second gap in torches. In the crossroads, head left, and go up the third gap in torches.

In this crossroads, head right and go up the second gap in torches.

Now in this crossroads, head right until you're just beyond the torches.

Now go down until you see the exit to your right.

Head across the bridges.

Now in this dark room, head all the way down, then all the way right, then up the passage. Go right at the top of the passage and go up the stairs.

From the top of the stairs walk left into the torch wall, up into the wall, then left and up. At the top of this passage, go right (going down when necessary) until you see a passage up. Go up until you hit the wall.

Then go right and you'll see the stairs up.

Eighteenth Floor

Head up from the stairs until you hit the wall, then right until you hit the wall, up until you hit the wall, right until you're past the stalagmite, then up until you hit the wall.

Go up the diagonal passage to your right, and when you can, go straight up until you hit the wall. Then go left until you hit the wall, up until you hit the wall, then go slowly left and watch for stairs to be above you. Go up them.

Go around the torch wall to the left, then up, and before hitting the wall head left. There's a narrow passage leading down, go down it. From there head left, then up, then left again to reach the stairs to the level above.

Seventeenth Floor

Now, if those switches are from left to right 1, 2, 3, 4, hit them in this order: 4, 3, 2, 1, 3. The door opens, and you can go up and right to the transporter to the tenth level.

Tenth Floor

Save the game, and go up the stairs to leave the mines.
