Starting the Game

This page explains how to start a new game of Pokémon Go, including creating your avatar and choosing a nickname.

Get the Game

Pokémon Go is available for iOS and Android devices. The following links will take you to the app:

Create an Account and Log In

When you start Pokémon Go, you will be asked to log in. To play Pokémon Go, you can either create an account at Pokémon.com and use that information to log in with Pokémon Go, or you can use a Google account to log in.

Agree to the Terms of Service

Once you log in, you will be asked to agree to the terms of service. You can also choose whether or not to receive emails about Pokémon Go.

Choose Your Style

After a brief introduction by Professor Willow, you will be asked to choose your avatar style. You can customize skin tone, hair color, eye color, as well as the style of clothing, shoes, and backpack.

When you are done, tap Yes to finalize your style. You can change your style any time.

Catch a Starter

After you choose your avatar style, there will be three starter pokémon nearby: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. You can only catch one.

If you keep running away from the starter pokémon, Pikachu will eventually appear instead.

Tap the starter pokémon that you want. Then you will be asked if you want to use the camera when catching pokémon. Using the camera will use more battery power. You can always change this setting later in your device's settings (not in Pokémon GO settings).

Move your device around until you see the pokémon, then swipe upward to throw a pokéball. If you miss, just swipe upward again to throw another pokéball. If you hit the pokémon, the pokéball will shake, then the pokémon will be caught. For more pokémon catching tips, read the catching pokémon page.

Choose a Nickname

After you catch your starter, you will be asked to choose a nickname for your Trainer. If another player is using the nickname that you choose, you will have to choose a different one.

After choosing your nickname, you are ready to begin!
