Bernard's Walkthrough

This walkthrough will tell you how to win the game if Bernard is in your party. There may be other ways to win depending on which other kids are in your party, but this page will focus on winning using Bernard's special abilities.

Introduction

There are several ways to win the game. Each method depends on a particular kid who has a special ability. The kids with special abilities are Bernard, Syd, Razor, Wendy, and Michael. Since this is the Bernard walkthrough, it will use Bernard's special ability to win the game. But if you also have Syd, Razor, Wendy, or Michael in your party, you can win the game with one of their methods instead. Just go to Syd/Razor's Walkthrough, Wendy's Walkthrough, or Michael's Walkthrough.

Get a Kid Thrown Into the Dungeon

Have Dave GO TO the left of the screen in order to reach the front of the mansion. Then have Dave PULL the door mat. You find a KEY. GET the KEY, then USE the KEY in the FRONT DOOR, which is the door on the right. Go in, and OPEN the door to the right of the grandfather clock and go through. Dave will be in the kitchen. Go to the far right of the kitchen, and Nurse Edna will catch Dave and throw him into the dungeon. Not to worry: it helps to have one kid in the dungeon. More on that later. (Note: If Edna was not in the kitchen, just have Dave stay in the kitchen and he will get thrown into the dungeon later.)

Get the Silver Key

Use the NEW KID command to switch to the other kid you brought with you (not Dave or Bernard). Go into the mansion, then walk to the right, where there is a GARGOYLE on the right side of the stairs. PULL the GARGOYLE. The door to the right will open. Now use the NEW KID command to switch to BERNARD.

With Bernard, go inside the mansion and go through the door that opened when the other kid pulled the gargoyle.

Beware! If you take too long, there will be a cut scene where Weird Ed will say that he is hungry, and he will leave his room. If Dave is not in the dungeon, have him to into the kitchen or the first room of the mansion so he will get thrown into the dungeon. Otherwise, if the Weird Ed cut scene happens while you are still in the first room of the mansion (with the gargoyle), have your kids go all the way to the right side of this room and go through the door on the right. This way, when Weird Ed comes down the stairs in the first room of the mansion, he won't find any of the kids there. If he DOES find you, he will throw a kid into the dungeon. But this is fine, because if you have been following the walkthrough, Dave is also in the dungeon. Which means that Dave can PUSH the LOOSE BRICK that is below one of the barred windows, which opens the door on the right side of the room for a few seconds. If you quickly switch to the other kid in the dungeon, he or she can escape through that open door. But if Dave is not in the dungeon, read how to get out of the dungeon for more information.

Anyway, one kid will still be standing in front of the gargoyle, and Bernard is in a dark room. Have the gargoyle kid go to the right of this room and open the door there, then go through (this is just to prevent that kid from being thrown in the dungeon as described in the previous paragraph). Then switch back to Bernard. Have him TURN ON the LIGHT SWITCH, which is to the left of his head somewhere (just move the cursor around until you find it).

Now that the lights are on, go to the left side of this room and you will see a SILVER KEY to the right of the FUSE BOX. GET the SILVER KEY.

Get the Radio Tube

Now have Bernard leave this room the way that he came in. Then in the first room of the mansion, go to the right side of the room and go through the door there. Have Bernard OPEN the OLD FASHION RADIO, then GET the RADIO TUBE from inside the radio.

Get rid of the Green Tentacle

Now, if you had Dave go into the kitchen and get caught by Nurse Edna or Weird Ed, and if the Weird Ed cut scene has already happened, the coast should be clear for Bernard to go into the kitchen. (If not, send one of the other kids first so that he or she gets thrown into the dungeon.) Bernard should currently be in the living room after getting the radio tube from the radio. Have Bernard go through the door on the left side of the living room. He will be back in the first room of the mansion. Go to the left side of this room, then go through the door to the right of the grandfather clock. Bernard is now in the kitchen. Go to the right side of the room and go through the door there. Bernard is now in the dining room. Go to the right side of this room and go through the door there. Bernard is now in the pantry. Use the SILVER KEY in the door in the middle of the room, and go through. Bernard is now standing beside a swimming pool. Have him stand in front of the ladder that goes down into the swimming pool.

Switch to the third kid (not Dave or Bernard). The Weird Ed cutscene (where he says that he is hungry) might happen soon, so if it does, stay out of the kitchen and the first room of the mansion. Then wait for the second part of the cutscene, where Ed gets food from the refrigerator (or if a kid is in the kitchen, Ed will throw the kid into the dungeon). After that part happens, wait for a little while and then it will be safe to go into the kitchen. If Ed does catch the third kid, read how to get out of the dungeon for more information.

When you're ready, go to the kitchen. Go through the door on the right to reach the dining room, then go through the door on the right to reach the pantry, then GET the FRUIT DRINKS from the shelf, then go back to the kitchen.

Back in the kitchen, go to the left side of the room and go through the door to return to the first room of the mansion. If the Weird Ed "I'm hungry" scene still hasn't happened yet, be prepared to hide. If Ed does catch you, read how to get out of the dungeon for more information. Anyway, your third kid should be in the first room of the mansion. Go up the stairs.

You'll be standing in front of a STEEL SECURITY DOOR. If Weird Ed is coming, you can go through the left door or the right door to hide. Now, go through the door on the left and GET the BOWL OF WAX FRUIT. Then go back to the steel security door and OPEN it, then go through.

You will be in a hallway. If Weird Ed is coming, go into either of the two doors here. Otherwise, go to the far right and go up the stairs. You will find a Green Tentacle. Try to go up the stairs on the left side of the room. The Tentacle will block you. GIVE it the WAX FRUIT, then GIVE it the FRUIT DRINKS. The tentacle will let you pass. If you need to hide from Weird Ed, either go into the door in the room where the Tentacle blocked you, or go down the stairs and hide in one of the two doors in that hallway.

Drain the Pool

Now go up the stairs from the room where the Tentacle blocked you. This hallway is where Weird Ed's room is, so if the "Gee! I'm hungry!" cutscene happens while you're here, you will need to hide very quickly. If that happens, it's probably best if you just go back down the stairs and go through the door in the room where the Tentacle blocked you. If Ed does catch you, read how to get out of the dungeon for more information.

Anyway, in the hallway above the room where the Tentacle blocked you, go to the right side of the hallway and go through the door between the two plants. USE the HUNK-O-MATIC MACHINE TM to become stronger. Now go all the way back to the outside of the mansion. PULL the bushes that are to the left of the stairs. Then OPEN the GRATING. Go into the grating, then go to the right side of the room. TURN ON the WATER VALVE. An alarm will start. Wait for the cut scene where Dr. Fred will panic, saying that there will be a nuclear meltdown. He will make the Purple Tentacle check on the reactor.

Get the Glowing Key

If you aren't quick enough with this next part, the house will explode. After the cut scene, quickly switch to Bernard and go down the ladder into the swimming pool. When you're at the bottom of the swimming pool, GET the GLOWING KEY which is below the number 20 on the left side of the pool. Then go back up the ladder to get out of the swimming pool. Then switch back to the kid who opened the water valve, and now TURN OFF the WATER VALVE. Don't do this while Bernard is still in the pool or he will die!

Call the Meteor Police

Now, with the kid who closed the water valve, go to the left and go through the grate. Go into the mansion and stand in front of the steps. Then switch to Bernard.

As Bernard, go through the door to the left of the swimming pool, then go through the door to the left and you will be in the dining room. Go through the door on the left to go to the kitchen. Then go through the door to the left to return to the first room of the mansion. GIVE the GLOWING KEY to the other kid. Then, as Bernard, go up the stairs, then go through the security door. Go to the right and go up the stairs, then go up the second set of stairs. Finally, go into the fourth door in this hallway (the one between two plants). You will be in the room with the sarcophagus.

Switch to the kid who standing in front of the stairs. Go outside and USE the DOORBELL. There should be a cutscene where Weird Ed will leave his bedroom. When this happens, have the kid who rang the doorbell go into the mansion, then switch to Bernard. As Bernard, wait a few seconds, then go into the hallway. Go through the THIRD door (to the left of one of the plants). You'll be in Weird Ed's room. GET the HAMSTER, then GET the CARD KEY that was behind the hamster. If you encounter Ed, you can GIVE him the HAMSTER to get him to leave you alone. Now go back to the hallway and go into the door on the right. Wait until it's safe to go back into the hallway, then in the hallway, go through the door on the left (not the one that goes to the stairs, but the one before that).

One of the kids got thrown into the dungeon when Weird Ed went to the front door. Switch to that kid. Go to the left side of the dungeon and USE the GLOWING KEY on both of the padlocks. Then OPEN the INNER DOOR and enter the number 0000. The door will open.

Switch to Bernard. READ the WANTED POSTER to learn the phone number of the Meteor Police. Then USE the RADIO TUBE in the TUBE SOCKET (on the left side of the radio). TURN ON the RADIO and then USE the RADIO. Enter the phone number that you read from the wanted poster. You will call the Meteor Police. After the cut scene, Bernard should go out into the hallway. Have him go into the door to the right of the one that he came out of. Nurse Edna will catch him and throw him into the dungeon.

Rescue Sandy

If you have not yet unlocked the secret lab, read the previous section to do that. Now wait around for the Meteor Police to arrive. It takes a long time.... Eventually, the Meteor Police will go in and capture the Meteor. After he leaves, you can do the following with any kid. Just make sure that Bernard GIVES the CARD KEY to whoever does the next part, if you don't have Bernard do it himself. GET the BADGE that the Meteor Police dropped. It's near the "Seckrit Lab" entrance. Go into the secret lab and GIVE the BADGE to the PURPLE TENTACLE. After the tentacle leaves, OPEN the door on the right and go through.

You will find Dr. Fred and Sandy. You can ignore Fred. Just go to the right and USE the CARD KEY in the CARD SLOT. Go through the door. There is a switch on the red machine on the left side of the room TURN OFF the SWITCH. Congratulations! You won the game!
