How To Use Your Hands As An Ocarina

It is possible to use your hands as a kind of simple ocarina. All you have to do is create a chamber for air in your hands, with a place to blow air into, and one place (only one) for the air to come out of. If you practice, you will be able to make music with your hands.

Step one: lock your fingers together

First, put your fingers together with the fingers interlocked, so that the fingers alternate. This is a pretty common way to hold your hands, and it's harder to describe than to demonstrate. Hopefully you can figure out what I'm talking about.

When you do this step, be sure to lock your fingers together really tightly. Don't hurt yourself, but do create a good seal between your fingers.

Step two: Squish the fleshy parts of your palms together

With fingers still interlocked, mash together the heels of your palms, as well as the sides of your palms that are farthest from you. You want to create an airtight chamber within your fingers and palms, so don't put the middle parts your palms together; just the outsides.

Step three: Put the tops of your thumbs together, and push them against your hands

The sides of your thumbs should be pressed together. Push your thumbs against your palms very tightly such that there is a small very gap between your thumbs (which should be side-by-side), but your thumbs should otherwise be creating an airtight seal on the chamber within your palms.

Step four: Put your lips on your thumbs

Put your lips on either the top half of the gap between your thumbs, or the bottom half. You want to leave part of that thumb gap open so that the air that you blow into the hand chamber comes out from a small gap.

Step five: Blow air into the hand chamber

Take a deep breath, then blow a powerful gust of air into your hands. Make sure that there is no air escaping from the hand chamber. Adjust your finger positions to block any leaks in the air zone. The only escaping air should be coming from the small gap between your thumbs. You will probably need to blow a pretty powerful gust of air into your hands for it to be able to shoot out quickly enough to make a whistling sound. Good luck!
