How To Make Duct Tape Clothing
Making clothes from duct tape is a popular, fun, and fairly easy activity. Learn how to make your own duct tape clothing here.
Make duct tape fabric
To make clothing, you need fabric, and to make duct tape clothing, you need duct tape fabric. With duct tape fabric, you can use a sewing pattern to show you how to make the fabric shapes that you will need, and then you can just tape them together.
To start making duct tape fabric, get a long strip of duct tape. Make sure that it is long enough for your clothing needs. Put the strip on a flat surface like a table (not on a carpet, or it might stick) with the sticky side up. Then, get another strip of duct tape of the same length. The the next part can be tricky: you want to put the sticky sides of the two strips together, but offset the two strips such that both pieces have a sticky part still showing. Then, flip the two strips over, and stick another strip down, touching the sticky part of the one on the flat surface. Flip the thing over and repeat until you have big enough duct tape fabric for your needs.
Note that you can make reversible clothing if you put strips of one color on one side and strips of another color on the other. You can even get fancy and do stripes, rainbows, and so on.
Using a sewing pattern, and other methods
Sewing patterns are readily available in crafting stores, but if you don't want to use one or don't have an easy way to go get one, the next best thing is to take apart an old garment that you don't want to wear anymore and can't donate, and then cut pieces of your duct tape fabric into the same shapes as the disassembled garment, then tape it together. Alternatively, you can just make something up, although this is more difficult.
How to care for your duct tape clothing
To wash duct tape clothing, wipe with a little soap and water, the rinse with a damp cloth and wipe dry with a towel or paper towel. If your clothing needs repair, just get out a roll of duct tape and patch it up.
Duct tape clothing cautions
Depending on the type of duct tape that you use, duct tape clothing can be very heavy. It also has no ventilation (unless you build some in), so be prepared for the possibility that you'll get tired and sweaty. Have plenty of water on hand.
